Almost thirty years ago, I worked in a company that had reached a high level of empowerment and was highly successful economically. That left its mark on me, and since then I have always been concerned with how to ensure that the existing potential can be used as fully as possible.
Employees have a very good eye for what is good, useful and efficient in their area of responsibility and what is not. When they are enthusiastic about their company and are given the freedom to shape it, amazing things happen.
As a leader, you have to be able to let go in such an environment. And I'm not talking about blue-eyed confidence, but well-founded confidence. If you are sure that things are going well, it is easy to let go and you have more time for higher-level and strategic issues.
Radical total restructuring is practically always an excessive demand that doesn't have to be. My approach is to test principles and elements of empowerment in small doses. This generates cultural impulses. Once you have digested and integrated them, the next step comes, and then the next. This creates a transformation without excessive demands and a momentum that can pick up speed quickly.
