The Viable System Model is a cybernetic representation of the necessary functions that organizations must have in order to be able to adapt optimally to their relevant environment. It shows which communication and information flows must be in place for good performance and adaptability.

Maximum Freedom in the Organizational Form

The Viable System Model shows basic requirements that apply to every organization. Whether your answer to these requirements involves a classic pyramid structure, self-organized circles or another form of organization is up to you. The model does not provide any recipes, but it helps enormously to ask the right questions.
